In the film we watched in class, Local909er, a film maker toured the Inland Empire and exposed businesses’ attempts to lure people into trying to attain the perfect lifestyle. The film maker explored Model Homes in Chino and showed how builders are trying to make people believe that they too can have to perfect life if they purchase one of their homes. Model homes contain bookcases, and furniture and decorations to make people believe that it is the perfect home to lure them into buying it. Eventually, when they do buy the home, they will have to fill it with furniture and decorations themselves and it will not look anything nearly as perfect as the model home.

Another location that the film maker explored was Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga. This a shopping-lovers dream destination. Stores and boutiques are made to look like old fashioned buildings and old street signs bareing names like Main Street are displayed throughout in order to give people the sense that they are back in the olden days. This is a corporation’s attempt to make people feel like they’re shopping in a historic marketplace. This old fashion style shopping center is used to lure tourists and Southern California residents to shop at their stores. People are enlightened by the idea of shopping in an environment that in a way makes them feel like they are part of history.

Corporations and businesses deceive people into believing that they can have perfect lifestyles and live like those they admire, like celebrities and those who are wealthy.

In this week’s reading, Cicero, a Greek philosopher, gave his suggestions on how to deal with different types of audiences while giving a speech.

I believe that it is important to know your audience in order for them to fully understand what you are trying to bring your points across. Knowing your audience gives you the ability to change up different aspects of your speech in order for them to comprehend what you are saying and why it is that you are saying in your speech.

Let’s say for example that you have an audience of chilren or just simply younger viewers. We all know that their minds aren’t fully as developed as adults, so, you must adjust your speech in order for them to understand it. Words must be simplified and you will most likely have to speak at a slower pace in order for the young ones to be able to keep up with your speech. What if you have a group of people who don’t follow or agree with what you say? Well, in this case, Cicero suggest “sucking up” to this audience in order to make them happy so that they will eventually give in to what it is that you are attempting to bring across to them. “Sucking up” will not only make them happy, but will make it so that they will be more open to what it is that you are saying.

At times you may also have an audience that fully agrees and understands with your speech; under these circumstances, you don’t have to adjust what it is that your speech is saying, you just simply have to be yourself, in a way.

In Slam, the central character of the movie Ray, seems to get by through life with the help of his lyrics and poetry. While in jail, he is able to hold off a confrontation, and avoids being physically hurt by others, only by the power of his words. His poetry and lyrics set him aside from those who simply want to hurt others for pleasure. Ray believes physical confrontation will do nothing, he points this out when he advises his blind friend that shooting the person who caused the blindness will not bring him his vision back.

Ray realizes that his surroundings are pressuring him to participate in drug deals and violent crimes. He is advised by others to focus more on his talent by participating in Slam poetry sessions and then developing his skills from there. Ray’s surroundings are crime-filled, this is basically the culture of the society around him. What else is he to do but participate in his society’s same actions? He simply can’t stand by and watch as others kill each other and possibly aim to kill him.

Ray’s poetic talent is his escape from this reality. With his words he is able to move others. Show them that violence and drugs isn’t what the world is all about. He is able to give himself hope for the future, to prove to himself that he doesn’t have to be surrounded by crime and drugs forever.

This movie shows how society has a huge influence over a person. Ray was pressured into selling drugs and he went to prison for it. But, with the help of another, a prison teacher, he is able to pursue his dreams and use his talent to work to his advantage.

Education today basically consists of a teacher standing in front of classroom and teaching their students information that may be useful to them in the future. Paolo Freire refers to this method at the “Banking” method, mainly because a teacher seems to be “depositing” information into a child’s head/bank. This form of education places all of the authority on the teacher and basically makes them the person in charge and in a way forces the student to listen and do whatever the teacher says. Freire provides an alternative to this method and says that teachers and student should take a teacher-student/student-teacher approach on education. This method allows both the teachers AND the students to learn and teach each other and to make learning more effective for both sides.

With this method, students can be more hands-on with their education which can help immensely. In a way, this can be the training for their career, instead of just the education on their career. In today’s society, people expect to go to college and expect their professors to provide them with every bit of information that they need to be successful. They expect their education to be like this because since the beginning of their schooling, they’ve had a teacher filling their heads with information and facts that they are told will be needed in the future. But, Freire seems to steer away from this form of education and considers it to turn people into mindless robots who only listen to what they are told and hold onto it like a security blanket. When students pay for their college and education, they expect to receive only the best of information, and I believe that universites and colleges should take Paolo Freire’s approach on education into consideration.

In the film, Children Of Men, the whole world has gone infertile and has gone into chaos. Theo, the lead protagonist helps an impregnated woman escape the grasps of a group of people only using her pregnancy as an aspect to help their own cause of advocating the rights of immigrants in Britain, or so they say.

The year is 2027 and the youngest living person is around 18 years old. The culture has changed ever since the sudden change to infertility. The world is completely chaotic, full of revolts and resistance groups trying to “improve” the world after its sudden downfall. People no longer cherish child births, since there are none. But the sudden appearance of a pregnant woman makes several people jealous and completely envious. At this time, people aren’t used to seeing a pregnant woman and being happy for her. They’re more on the side of killing her since they cannot have children of their own.

Their culture has changed to chaotic rage and crime filled streets because there are no children. But, Theo, once finding out that this woman is pregnant, feels compassion for her and decides to help her escape those that are trying to harm her. The times have not changed Theo, culture has changed around him, but has not changed Theo himself. As soon as he saw the pregnant woman, Kee, he went back to his old ideals, and took the role of caring for her and keeping her from danger. Culture may have had a major influence on the world, and possibly even in Theo, but, as soon as danger threatened Kee, that culture seemed to have been put aside and he decided to do what was right.

Education today has reached a whole new level. More and more people are earning an education and are becoming successful. But, would these people be AS successful if they had followed their natural inclinations and become whatever it is they, themselves, wanted to become without any parental or any kind of authority figures’ influence?

In our modern day, teachers are influencing children to be as successful as they possibly can, telling them that they should become a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or even a scientist. What if a child is looking for a career in art? Music? Or entertainment? Where’s the encouragement for that?

All people are naturally born with inclinations that steer them toward their interests and help them to plan out and accomplish their goals. But, when education interferes, it gives people the idea that they have to become something/someone significant, someone who earns vasts amounts of money, and it basically gives people the idea that they can only achieve this by earning their ACADEMIC education.

But what if a person were to, let’s say, earn a musical or artistic education? (As in they learn to sing, or play a musical instrument) Is this not a life skill that can make them extremely successful as well? In certain low income neighborhoods and environments, musical and artistic capabilities are of the highest value, seeing as they give people a form of escape out of their poverty stricken lives.

People have the ability within themselves to become whatever they please. Their natural instincts guide them towards their goals, but, how can they achieve them when they have educational and parental authority telling them otherwise and encouraging them to be something completely different from their conscience?

Sure musical and artistic abilities don’t ensure a successful lifestyle, but neither does an academic education. It’s all about the work and dedication that a person puts into their chosen career, and this is what I believe Rousseau attempted to bring across through his writings.

Thomas Hobbes states in the Leviathan that any government is better than no goverment at all. Even putting up with a tyrannical form of government is better than having no rules and laws, and having all people running amok doing whatever they please. A society with no rules or laws is free to do as they desire; what’s stopping them from hurting their next door neighbor, or murdering a small child? A society needs laws to keep them in order and to enforce consequences on negative actions such as murder or violence.

But even putting up with a tyrranical government can be tragic to those who are under its authority. Maybe even to the extent that the people may want to revolt against them in a violent or even non-violent way. But what can lead these people to revolt or resist against these forms of government? Surely not just because, for example, they demand to lower taxes, but more serious, illegal actions, like the imbezzling of the people’s tax money. This is not only illegal, but makes the government stronger, in a way, and basically hurts the people’s economic status because their tax dollars aren’t going to the proper causes.

Another may also be that a government goes from being Democratic to being a Communism, that could also be a possible cause for revolt. The people would lose so many of their freedoms that they had and basically would all be controlled by a tyrranical figure.

But either way, any form of government is better than none, because if there were no government, societies would be filled with crime and violence, and would possibly be less populated (more crime, violence, and murders).

Both Mencius and Hsun Tzu seem to have fairly reasonable arguments for their points of view on human nature. Mencius believes that humans, by nature, are in all ways good, while Tzu believes that humans are actually the opposite of that, evil. In an exerpt from Mencius’ work, Mencius, he has a conversation with a couple of his peers and expresses how he gives honor to those who are superior to him and how he practices acts of good.

In Tzu’s work, Man’s Nature Is Evil, he contradicts what Mencius says and states that if people were by nature good, then there would be no need for kings and ritual principles. He then goes on to say that man is in a way selfish for giving in to their animal instincts.

I myself do not agree to these two mens’ arguments. I believe that people are born in a sort of neutral state, where they are neither good nor evil. Then, as they experience life and encounter obstacles and such, they are shaped into the person they are meant to be, which may be either a good, or bad.

The one that i disagree most with is Hsun Tzu, his views on human nature and how to cure it seem to be completely unreasonable. At one point he expresses how people should be cured from desiring gain. I see this as completely unreasonable. A person desires to gain love, friendships, relationships and many other things, and to completely cure a person of these desires would basically make a person life pointless to live. It’s only natural that a person desires to gain, because if they didn’t, then they would never grow as a person or ever progress.
